August 2010
From the desk of the CommanderHi everyone,
I hope everyone is fine. Have enough of the heat yet?
I'm back. I guess you are stuck with me another year.
The building and land are still under contract, and the closing is suppose to be June 1 2011, but could be sooner.
Everyone had a great time at the steak bake. Aug 3 was national night out. The Boro, police, fire and rescue squad put on a good show and they used our land as they did in the past. There were demonstrations by the police, fire and rescue squad and plenty of food and good friends. Thanks to all that helped especially Gordy Johnson and Bongi who were on the grill all night. Ray and Joyce Collins who helped all night, Joe lettiere, Felix Mateo's, Phil Slack and of course we couldn't do it with out BETTY BOHN and Tonya, Anne Ostarticki, Brenda Cunningham, Jeri Abramchak. Seems the same people help all the time.
We will be having a family picnic on Sept 19 at 12 noon to 5 pm. $10.00 per person. Sign up at the dugout.
On Sept 25 we will be having a yard sale at the post, you can donate any good, clean item to the post and we will sell it, or you can rent a space for $10.00 and sell your own stuff. It will be from 8 am to 5 pm.
We will have a New Years eve party this year if we get enough help. Check at the dug out around the end of Sept.
March 19 2011 we will have the Legion birthday and St Patrick's day celebration, dinner and dance. The same 7 piece band as last year that everyone enjoyed. Cover 2 Cover will be entaining us again this year. Also I am trying to get WDVR to do a live remote. This will be our last one here so sign up early.

Back to the commander
Don't forget Veterans Day Nov 11th. Please come to the monument for a service. Veterans day is for the living and the deceased. Skip the sales and come to the service and let the stores know it is a day for veterans and not sales.
A freeloaders last request
Once upon a time there was a Veteran who was only a card carrying member of a veterans organization. All his life, he took benefits and entitlement won for him by the Veterans Service Organization. He never helped out, he only asked "what's in it for me?"
On his death bed, he told his wife, "Please do something for me - I want to be buried in a Veterans cemetery, have a Veterans grave marker, and I want an Honor Guard to be my pallbearers."
"But you never helped out, you only took" his wife exclaimed. "Why do you want them for pallbearers?" "My dear," he replied, "they've carried me this far, they might as well carry me the rest of the way!"
Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, but beautiful old people are works of art.
A special thanks to our VETERANS.
We owe our freedom to you -- the fine men and women who've served our country with bravery and pride.
And now more than ever, as so much of the world discovers the shining beacon of democracy, we owe you a special debt of gratitude.
Until next time...
for God and Country
Bob Collumb
